The Buddha Gives a Lesson on Forgiveness

The Buddha was sitting under a tree talking to his disciples when a man came and spit on his face. He wiped it off, and he asked the man, “What next? What do you want to say next?” The man was a little puzzled because he himself never expected that when you spit on somebody’s face, he will ask, “What next?” He had no such experience in his past. He had insulted people and they had become angry and they had reacted. Or if they were cowards and weaklings, they had smiled, trying to bribe the man. But Buddha was like neither, he was not angry nor in any way offended, nor in any way cowardly. But just matter-of-factly he said, “What next?” There was no reaction on his part.

Buddha’s disciples became angry, they reacted. His closest disciple, Ananda, said, “This is too much, and we cannot tolerate it. He has to be punished for it. Otherwise everybody will start doing things like this.”

Buddha said, “You keep silent. He has not offended me, but you are offending me. He is new, a stranger. He must have heard from people something about me, that this man is an atheist, a dangerous man who is throwing people off their track, a revolutionary, a corrupter. And he may have formed some idea, a notion of me. He has not spit on me, he has spit on his notion. He has spit on his idea of me because he does not know me at all, so how can he spit on me?

“If you think on it deeply,” Buddha said, “he has spit on his own mind. I am not part of it, and I can see that this poor man must have something else to say because this is a way of saying something. Spitting is a way of saying something. There are moments when you feel that language is impotent: in deep love, in intense anger, in hate, in prayer. There are intense moments when language is impotent. Then you have to do something. When you are angry, intensely angry, you hit the person, you spit on him, you are saying something. I can understand him. He must have something more to say, that’s why I’m asking, “What next?”

The man was even more puzzled! And Buddha said to his disciples, “I am more offended by you because you know me, and you have lived for years with me, and still you react.”

Puzzled, confused, the man returned home. He could not sleep the whole night. When you see a Buddha, it is difficult, impossible to sleep again the way you used to sleep before. Again and again he was haunted by the experience. He could not explain it to himself, what had happened. He was trembling all over and perspiring. He had never come across such a man; he shattered his whole mind and his whole pattern, his whole past.

The next morning he was back there. He threw himself at Buddha’s feet. Buddha asked him again, “What next? This, too, is a way of saying something that cannot be said in language. When you come and touch my feet, you are saying something that cannot be said ordinarily, for which all words are a little narrow; it cannot be contained in them.” Buddha said, “Look, Ananda, this man is again here, he is saying something. This man is a man of deep emotions.”

The man looked at Buddha and said, “Forgive me for what I did yesterday.”

Buddha said, “Forgive? But I am not the same man to whom you did it. The Ganges goes on flowing, it is never the same Ganges again. Every man is a river. The man you spit upon is no longer here. I look just like him, but I am not the same, much has happened in these twenty-four hours! The river has flowed so much. So I cannot forgive you because I have no grudge against you.”

“And you also are new. I can see you are not the same man who came yesterday because that man was angry and he spit, whereas you are bowing at my feet, touching my feet. How can you be the same man? You are not the same man, so let us forget about it. Those two people, the man who spit and the man on whom he spit, both are no more. Come closer. Let us talk of something else.”

11. Nature is not FOR us, it is a PART of us. They are part of your worldly family.

12. Children are the seeds of our future. Plant love in their hearts and water them with wisdom and life's lessons. When they are grown, give them space to grow.

13. Avoid hurting the hearts of others. The poison of your pain will return to you.

14. Be truthful at all times. Honesty is the test of ones will within this universe.

15. Keep yourself balanced. Your Mental self, Spiritual self, Emotional self, and Physical self - all need to be strong, pure and healthy. Work out the body to strengthen the mind. Grow rich in spirit to cure emotional ails.

16. Make conscious decisions as to who you will be and how you will react. Be responsible for your own actions.

17. Respect the privacy and personal space of others. Do not touch the personal property of others - especially sacred and religious objects. This is forbidden.

18. Be true to yourself first. You cannot nurture and help others if you cannot nurture and help yourself first.

19. Respect others religious beliefs. Do not force your belief on others.

Who has been writing my story of late? It seems as if someone that was not me at times. Taking hold of this vessel is at times so much harder than I had imagined.

I have found myself- by the might of speed and time- to be HERE and NOW. I must take hold of these reigns and ride it out into the dying light. Meditating lots on the Caduceus and the Wrench. Building, Healing, Evolving, Growing. These things are not without reach. And while I may have created the ideas with the idea of another- I must still follow through- for why else am I here?

Magicians hands come out of the earth. Worn and Eaten, but so ready to fill with wonder and might. Along these dark evenings we shall plot the most glorious moments we have ever know. Wonder is here and bright and constant.
Whatever it is we must follow.

Today was a strange day. This month has been a strange month. This year has been a strange year.

Nothing is really what I thought it was going to be. Surprise. Or not.

I was looking at my horoscope today:
"Nobody thought it would go this way. You expected something more or something entirely different than what you've got and it's calling you to wonder if it would be best to depart before things get worse. Don't be upset with yourself for not being able to handle this; you didn't know it had strings attached. It doesn't matter if you stay or go. What matters right now are your motives; you may be better off going at this independently than you will be if you continue to have to adjust all of your behavior to please someone else, or your own sense of righteousness."

Of course- it's all mumbo-jumbo. But still. Always worth looking at to reflect upon.
If I take this into account within my own life. This could be talking about many things.

All I know is that I am propelled to go right now. I'm propelled to run, jump, and fly into something that is different than this. Because I want to Soar. And I know that leaping off the edge is the only way to really do it.

I am so amazed right now. I feel like I've been shot out of a long tunnel. Or at the very least like someone took off my "jaded POV' sunglasses.
I'm dusting myself off, and looking at the damage. There is nothing that has been broken beyond at least a moderate repair.
Wow. Wow. Wow. Humbling. Motivating. Stunning. The light is so bright now.

I had to go through a lot of shit to get here. I had to learn a lot of lessons. Lessons that I had to learn now, so that I maybe the person I want to be in the future.
I wonder if asking to be a hero, means we get more challenges early on?

I am up for it. This was a hard one. But I havn't backed down yet. No! No!

So much under the surface. I am just really seeing it for the first time.

And I am so happy that I have the chance.

How did I ever think I would get wise and old without fucking up along the way?

Into stratosphere and higher levels of energy. Warmer vibrations, and settling in.

Knowing it is in full effect now.

Maybe its to late to save some things- but others are just beginning.

Learning lots of lessons. Hurtling through space at a very fast rate. How lucky I am to even be here. Every moment is a miracle. And this is something that I have seemingly forgot.

I am learning something about SURRENDER right now. What comes will come. And there are other forces that will do there will. You can only surrender.
When harsh winds blow trees, they bend with the wind, not against it. Things that are rigid are blown down, and collapse.

There is magic in my finger tips and of that I am aware. I can influence my surroundings and the world in very real ways. So where is the balance between SURRENDER and ACTION?
How much to I push, and how much do I pull? That's the delicate balance.
I've been pushing to much recently, and that's why I am so tired.

Through all of this though. I am learning. Learning to see the little glimmers of light- everywhere.

But by god do i hope that this Quantum Leap happens soon!

Humbling Experiences. I am not used to feeling like a fool, or ashamed, or like i have been blind. How did I find myself in this loop? When did I start to close my eyes? When did I fall back into the robot?

There is much work to do.

Why is it our natural reaction to continue to work harder on our actions that do not produce results? Why is the idea that more force will bring results? And not an re-approach of the question?
Because it is hard to step back and it is hard to reevaluate your whole situation when you are in it.

I have been letting myself operate under: Fear
We need: Hope ----> How did I forget this?
We were upside down.

We've landed. Now what?

I must clear all the excess energy.
I must focus on the things I know to be true.
I must retrace the coming into myself and my operation.
I must trust that all will be as it will.

Green Office Artistic Challenge: The Fridge Project

This weekend marked the start of our build days for The Fridge Project, SPACE architects part of the Green Office Artistic Challenge 2010. Our build workshop took place at 3532 Halsted St, a former auto body shop and now a parking garage during Cubs season, that has been generously donated to us. We've also had some donations of paint and materials from Sherwin Williams located at 3311 N Halsted.

Special thanks to Alderman Tom Tunney (44th Ward) and his staff for helping make all these arrangements for us. Another specials thanks to the Chicago Art Department and Nathan Peck for helping us recruit artists and produce the build days.

I've returned from a 14 day trip to the Black Rock Desert. Was a wonderful gift to be able to be a part of set-up this year and to be a citizen of BRC in 2009. Long hot and dust filled days of working, playing, conversations, parties and learning. Lots of wonderful art this year- which is what I mostly took photos of.
Need to thank all the people at Media Mecca, Burners Without Borders, Hookahdome, Flight to Mars and Entheon Village for being family and friends to me and helping create my wonderful experience.

Another Photo that I never sent from the Museo de Arte Moderno de Cartagena de Indias in Columbia.

Bought a Kiwano fruit at the Grocery Store the other day. Caused a problem in the check out line because no one knew what it was. But I took it home and opened it up. It was filled with green jelly and seeds!
An odd flavor. Not good, not bad, plus I dont think mine was exactly ripe. But yes. Desert Melon. Odd.

Chiditarod 2009

So Saturday (3/7) was the Chiditarod 2009.
It's a canned food drive disguised as a pub crawl/shopping cart race. We have 5 different pit stops, with a required 20 minute stop at each bar. There were over 100 teams this year in an assortment of costumes.
My favorites were definitely the pope mobile and the Bill & Ted's phone booth (seen below) for costumes and cart design. But both Synchro teams took it with their separate grill carts this year. One of them serving up Bacon, and the other burgers and kabobs along the routes.
It should be noted that many participants weren't up to the weather (which included tons of rain) or couldn't hold their alcohol, and bailed out early. Several shopping carts were abandoned. Shame, shame, shame. You need to finish a race! That's how we get the canned food to the drop point!

And I think the bacon cart, and Poochie, would be proud for me to mention, that they were absolutely, and totally dead last.

So I'm at a hotel in Lisle, IL and I'm doing a shoot for "Strengthening Families Illinois" and I realize I really want to enter that STA contest, and it ends today!
So the video isn't as great as I'd like it to be.
....I had plans for this video....I wish I had had the time to put it all together...
But it's fun, and I like the animation a lot.
Hopefully I'll get in the top 10 and they'll let me make another video....

Wanderings through womb time:
It was easier the second time to descend. I like pretending that I'm submerging into some type of ancient Egyptian tomb- one where the Nile flows below it.
This is the place where we begin to think that space travel is possible. Not in our bodies, rather in our minds. Our bodies are just carbon husks protecting the more precious and ethereal light within.

This immediately became clear: this is a process and will take several journeys before any true or cosmic insight is to be found.

The answers to most of my questions lay in the back of my mind even now. It is just revealing and trusting in them before they have become solid manifestations in this world. I know. I know. I know. I know. Leap.

Well I was gone for a bit of an extended break there. No connection with much of my internet world. This creates an interesting vacuum for my digital self to now re-inhabit. So what of this world that keeps moving at 107278.87 km/hr? (at least in one direction)

The time for extended thinkings and long stares at pinpoints in space has now flown. We reach a more critical moment as the points on the map turn into larger circles of confusion. Sometimes when the focus goes, you realize that there are only a few directions to move in anyways. I do not miss the clearer resolution. HD is for people who are stationary. Now I realize that I already have my direction and the loss of sharpness is a result of the speed in which I am traveling.

The interconnectedness of this universe, my cells, and our relationships seems to be both gathering glue and losing their grip in the same instance. This is the secret- that all dualities must co-exist together. It is their discord that gives us this illusion of Euclidean 3-D.

Our adventures become more real as we grasp this being the only moment that we are available to. I know you're out there- and that you're listening through multiple avenues. The Telepathic lines are being re-opened. Welcome in.

Things are becoming more icy, more cold, and whatever word is four times harsher than brisk. I fear the end of the biking season, while I have not officially hung up the tires yet, I may have to admit that December 14th was the last day I ventured out.

Personal projects and business development is on the fore front of the mind. I'm hoping to find the website (klaserfilms.com) up and running with reels and magic sometime soon in the new year. Hopefully this will also help facilitate the final creation and production of MinotaurTV (MTV if you will...)

We'll be uploading the Sky Factory music video, the Artisan Time Lapse, Personal Reels, Science Dog, an unfinished Icarus2.0 trailer and Charles Shaw's lecture all quite soon. In the mean time its back to the editing bay.

Things buzz and it is cold. This winter will take sometime to get through- but I like time that takes time. Because so much of it goes so fast these days. Watching my family grow up is truly strange, as it must be for them to watch me grow up.

A day later, I continue writing another post that I am not sure if I will actually publish. I save these and then work on them, and then they are deleted. Quite un-worthwhile.

Icarus 2.0

So. I've (mostly) finished shooting Spenser's Image Design film. The camera jammed twice! Once during the city shots, and once during the wing shots....which is really to bad. We probably didn't get it on 16mm....but c'est la vie.
It was all intended to be done on 16mm but I also was able to capture some video of the burns, as well as both 35mm and digital stills.

So what to do with what I have?
The film was supposed to be a hybrid film between the stories of Prometheus and Icarus. A story about gaining fire (industry, technology, energy) and about what happens when it gets to hot and burns out of control. It looks like the Prometheus section (Kits Film) may not even get done now...

So what to do, what to do...

I've been playing with the Icarus myth for awhile now. And I would like to continue. This project may not have come into fruition this time. But now I have some building blocks. I want to play with the Icarus story more! And it will build, maybe into a completely different project that I had previously though.
Anyone out there want to collaborate?

First of all: KEO
And for those of you who are more into: Wiki

The Keo Project is a piece of Space Art, (wait? Thats a genre!) conceived in 1994 by Jean-Marc Philippe. KEO is a satellite that will hopefully be launched into space and then fall back to earth in 50,000 years. It will hold personal messages from anyone who writes in. Messages from people all over the world- those who are unable to write (elderly, children, hard-to-reach places) are especially encouraged to write in- which I'm digging. Apparently there is enough digital room in the plans to hold a 4 page letter written by everyone on earth. (So you should write in!) The satellite will also hold a drop of human blood, chosen randomly, and a few other artifacts like a digital modern day "library of Alexandria".
Which when you think about it.....50,000 years? Thats like taking a time machine back to when our ancestors invented fire!
How much will our species accomplish by then? Will we even be the same species? We maybe wiped out, we maybe so differently evolved....
Reading the letters of 50,000 years past is an amazing glimpse of the past for the future! Imagine...we may seem like beautiful, dreaming, and hopeful creatures! Or we may look like fearful, paranoid, unsure creatures....it depends what WE write.

2008 Chicago Halloween Parade (Rats Rats Rats)

Welcome to Rat City!

My good friend, Tom Laporte, has been running the Chicago Halsted Street Parade for the past 6 years. This year, he gave away some of his responsibilities to Ben Fain. A graduate student from SAIC. He transformed the parade into a very loose, fruedian, analogy of our subconsciousness. It was complete with a float with spinning pizza, a scared old man, and some 30-40 rats!
We got some great reactions from the crowd. Scared some kids, scared some adults!, and got a bunch of "ooohs" and "ahhhhs".
I'm never quite sure how we get away with these things....Thank you Tom Laporte & Ben Fain.

Third Coast Culture Cooperative (TC3)

So I need more excuses to do more things. Wreck more havoc. Create more Chaos. Cultivate more community, energy and love.

I'd like to throw a fund raiser concert/art show for the West Memphis 3.
One of the most embarrassing things, in my opinion, that the American court system continues to keep alive. 3 teenagers arrested and convicted in Arkansas, for the killing of three young boys. Damien Echols was given the death sentence while Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin were sentenced to life imprisonment. They didn't do it though. They were convicted on fears of 'witchcraft', a false testimony, and a scared jury. The evidence overwhelmingly shows that the boys didn't do it.
Damien hasn't been killed yet. But they've been in jail for 15 years! They're not young teenagers anymore, they're grown men, and they've lost so much of their lives. They need to be freed. Damien is on is last appeal with habeas corpus.

I think it would be groovy to run a fund raiser for their legal fund.

We are planning the next inevitable step in things to come. Our machine is running out of steam. and the gears need more oil, but the ground has gone dry. The crazy men, who've been tinkering in their attics are ready to come out now. They've made a few new gadgets that run on wind and sun. If you look around the gold watch-band they give you- it's covered in astro-physical symbols like those of Dr. Zeitgeist. They tell you things about your soul, but only after you've already discovered them.
The big guy is practicing air brakes. So that we can all run away in a bus when the world starts tumbling down. I'm hoping we dont have to use the shotguns, but we're not taking any chances.
Maybe we can run away from all of this and make our own microcosm. Ordered after the stars in the sky on the night we first set free. We look inside ourselves and we find the mysteries of the universe. Our hands melt through trees like they are water. It was only a matter of time until all the atoms met up right. We are mostly empty space.
Forgive us for being quiet for so long. Forgive us for when we become over-zealous to late. We all knew it was coming. some of us prepared for nothing and some of us watched dumbly. The ones who had been practicing using their minds like jedi, they were the only ones with any real upper-hand. But it was all in their heads, and yet it was in ours too.

So its a very good week for several reasons. But one of them specifically being that Kristin Ford is back in town. We got together and I got an early copy of her new CD
"Dirty Nasty" and as we'd already planned talking about doing a music video.
Well sometimes talking turns into doing- so because of her short stay we went out and filmed a bunch today. I'm pretty happy with the footage. it maybe a bit dark and/or grainy at times. Lots of people making out, guitars, and white paint!

I'm quite hard on myself much to much of the time. I dont live up to my own expectations to often. Not because I'm not trying or anything, but because the standards I set for myself are not only hard to reach, but very broad and cover so many different points in my life.
I need to learn to put in even more effort, with less unneeded criticism on my part.

To create a new challenge for living men + women.

We write this standing on the edge. The edge looms before we, just un-reachable and yet rapidly moving closer, infinite, we look into the future.

The human race has pushed + sped us to this moment that is: Now. We celebrate the now. Faithfully + indulgently using our 5 senses to register the given fabric of this time + space. Nothing is off-limits. Technology + Nature infused into one gigantic heartbeat. We recognize the importance of nature on the same scale that we recognize the importance of cement, steel, cybernetics and electronics; both are sacred.

We have had frightful visions of the apocalypse that is nigh. We have had ecstatic daydreams of the utopia that is nigh. Both visions are truth, both vanish like smoke. Living in the now does not give us the right to deny the future. Our work creates the future, celebrates the future, envisions the future.

The belief is that all people have an opinion, a vision, a statement- and all of these are valid. Thus we do not deny any idea, creed, any vision except those of ignorant and misdirected hate.
The goal is to explore the highest points + the lowest points of intellectual conversation, radical self-expression, physical titillation, and spiritual journey. We recognize that to have the best, we must also have the worst. Opposites are linked by inseparable bonds of invisible might.

We will not apologize for our visions of the future! Even when we are selves are taken over by the future and proven wrong, ignorant, and pitiful.

War is not the answer. Freedom is our deliverance.

We seek to celebrate both feminism and masculinity. Both ideas are to be celebrated + used as points of dialogue. Society is threatened by both sexes being oppressed, confused and conformed.

Not all things of the past are irrelevant. We do not agree with all those who came before us. Yet, some things are worth preserving. We do not tend to live or be created within a vacuum. Instead we seek to live in + be created in the evolution of Homo Sapiens. What we seek to throw away is that which has become trite and meaningless. To throw out out-dated ideology and ritual and instead seeking to create new ideas and rituals that are meaningful to us, in this now.

When we are aged, throw us into the fire as well. Re-shape the world, the words, the meaning. For when our bodies die, our futures do as well.

We are moving towards something. Is that much inevitable? Evolution never stopped, and man is not exempt. We are moving in a direction that I, nor we, can fathom. So we make guesses, albeit educated guesses.
Singularity, Artificial Intelligence, Space Travel, Cyber Space.

The next evolution of man will not be, nor is it at this moment clean.
All stages of life are messy. Birth, Sex, Eating, Death: All are filled with sucking noises, juices, pain and are messy.
Mankind is fighting for a new place in the world, not as domineers, but as an elevated species. It's just as messy. We are killing, maiming, raping, and destroying ourselves because we fear whats on the other side of the wall.
And the other side of that wall is scary, because only a few people have been there before...and we killed them anyways.
We are gaining energy for a collected Quantum Leap in evolutionary history. Just like our species did when we became Homo Sapien Sapiens.

Maybe I'm just as deluded as everyone else. This is my fantasy.

Just more than 24 hours back from the first Great Lakes Regional Decomposition party...and oh my, oh my. What a great party it was, and we're only going to be doing it bigger in June. Lakes of Fire!
It was my first time stepping up to be a lead or anything like that. And as well, it was the first time I ever really had my own solid projects, I had two domes set up with deco and hookahs. It was fun mastering and figuring out the geodesic dome structure.
The effigy was quite wonderful, a factory, mostly of poochie's design I believe. And then a huge bramble ball was lit on fire and rolled into it. Fireworks on top, and the factory started to burn down.
Again, I don't believe in any of that hippy shit, but we definitely burned away the summer. Saturday was summer, Sunday was fall. Much fun and a wonderful burn...this made up for my unability to come out to the playa this year.

There was another transition inside of me. This one is coming even closer to an edge, another plane, the workings of a greater me. Excited. Hard work and concentration are necessary- otherwise we'll lose the energy we've built up. Leap-Leap-Leap.

Starting on several days of little sleep we wake up early and feel as if the world is underwater. The pick up is an hour and a half late, enough time to wearily forget and get ready.

Went to Bim's Ranch. Indian summer type of a day. Forgot to take photos- will have to rely on my memory. The internet will never forget.

Things are starting to move quicker now. The warmth from the sun is going down, slowly, and so the warmth from movement/friction must pick up the pace. Sometimes, even when things are not important, they seem overwhelming.

This virus is running a muck. I was almost done with it, and then, got it again, from another source.

"Damn the acts of trading saliva!" Yelled the man in the purple robe at the back of the room. "Damn it all to hell! You're pointless mashings and pressed faces! Your energy is wasted!".
He was then quickly escorted from the room and brought to lower chambers of the castle. He was quite calm once we seized him roughly, and was silent even when we strapped him down to the table. The executioner came a few minutes later carrying his regular assortment of gleaming vegetables and letter-openers.
The man in purple put up no fight. The blade is raised. "I am the cup and you are the sword," said the purple man, and as the blade came down, "...I am as guilty as thee. Your sexuality is my violent might." And he was dead and pleased.

Have to say- had quite a wonderful holiday today. We went down to the forest preserve, and it was beautiful with colors and friends. Swimming in creeks, finding shells, biking, napping and other wonderful things...

But alas, no need to bore you with the real world. And now onto this:

'Scatter Shot'

When I was within the darkness, I was focused on a point

Space Knights.

We can bubble over like too much water in a hot pot, touching those other things in the void. Only if we take the time to simmer, to build, to pressurize. There is no liberation from it all, but there is a freedom from our bondage. Dream deep and fill your mind well.
There are certain things needed for a Quantum Leap. I have not attempted one before, but I sense that I am getting closer and closer to attaining one. What are the things that I must do, in my own self:
Diet, Excersise, Meditation, Right Action, Learning.

Bring oneself to the brink. Bet your whole existence on an idea and leap over into that other void- you'll be surprised how solid the clouds become. Drink in deep the darkness as well as the light. We are centered beings- or at least trying to be anyways.

Everything will be fine as soon as you allow it to be so.

These are days where the weather seems to grow longer with the light-it stretches. Random appearances from old friends and dead friends. Walking down the street, with neons, this is like the first time I was ever here. Newly baked and fresh bread knows nothing but the warmth of the oven. The bread fears the outside world like you fear the inside of your eyelids- teeth come for us all in the end. Ask our friend Tommy, if he were still around, he was always yelling about 'Teeth this and teeth that!' and none of us believed him. Then one night the teeth got 'em, just as crazy as when he told us they would.
